Trip Overview

Sahara, Fes, the blue city, and the cedar forests

This route follows the same first five days as our 6-Day Marrakech, Sahara Desert & Fes Tour — but upgrades the Sahara night to a luxury desert camp — then adds two more day trips from Fes: the blue-washed lanes of Chefchaouen, and the Middle Atlas cedar forests around Ifrane and Azrou, before flying out of Fes. Airport pick-up and a night in Marrakech, the High Atlas passes and Berber valleys, a camel trek and a night at a luxury desert camp at Merzouga, then four nights based in the same Fes riad for guided medina sightseeing and two round-trip excursions.

Transport, driver-guide, and accommodation are shared across the group, which keeps the per-person cost far below a private itinerary covering the same route.

Day by Day

The journey, day by day

Day 1 · Arrive≈6 km · about 15–20 min

Arrival in Marrakech

Pick-up from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) and transfer to your hostel in the medina. The rest of the day is free to explore Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the surrounding souks — this is also your chance to meet the rest of the group before departure the next morning.

Day 2 · Dades≈210 km · about 3.5 hrs driving

Marrakech → Dades Gorges

Early morning group departure from the hostel. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at the Ait Benhaddou kasbah (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and continue through the Valley of Roses to an overnight stay in the Dades Gorges.

Day 3 · Desert≈235 km · about 4.5 hrs driving

Dades Gorges → Merzouga Desert

Drive on via Tinghir and Erfoud to Merzouga, gateway to the Sahara. Late afternoon camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, arriving at your luxury desert camp in time for sunset — dinner under the stars in your own private en-suite tent.

Day 4 · Fes≈460 km · about 7–7.5 hrs driving

Merzouga → Fes

Optional sunrise over the dunes before camels carry the group back to Merzouga. Full day's drive north via Er-Rachidia, Midelt and the Middle Atlas cedar forests to Fes. Overnight in Riad Fez Mahal or La Perle de la Medina.

Day 5 · Fes

Fes sightseeing with a local guide

Full guided day through the Fes el-Bali medina — the Chouara tanneries, the souks, and the Bou Inania Madrasa. Overnight in the same Fes riad.

Day 6 · Chefchaouen≈400 km round trip · about 7 hrs total driving

Chefchaouen excursion

Round-trip day excursion north through the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen. Free time to wander the blue medina, with an optional hike up to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint. Return to Fes for the night — same riad.

Day 7 · Ifrane≈170 km round trip · about 3 hrs total driving

Middle Atlas & Ifrane excursion

Round-trip day excursion to Ifrane, known for its alpine-style architecture, and the Middle Atlas cedar forests near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques. Return to Fes for the night — same riad.

Day 8 · Depart≈15 km · about 20–25 min

Transfer → Fes Airport

Free morning depending on flight time, then transfer from your Fes riad to Fes-Saïss Airport (FEZ) for departure. Trip ends.

Good to Know

Two extra days, plus an upgraded desert night

This route follows our 6-Day Marrakech, Sahara Desert & Fes Tour, adds two extra day trips from Fes — Chefchaouen and the Middle Atlas/Ifrane — and upgrades the Sahara night from a shared camp to a luxury desert camp with a private en-suite tent, which accounts for the difference in price between the two routes.

Groups are capped at 16 travelers to keep things sociable without losing the personal touch. Departures run every Saturday year-round — reserve early in peak season (October–April) as routes sell out.

Prefer the shorter version with the standard desert camp, without the Chefchaouen and Ifrane days? See our 6-Day Marrakech, Sahara Desert & Fes Tour. Want just the desert loop back to Marrakech? See our 4-Day Sahara Desert Group Tour.

FAQs

8-Day Marrakech, Sahara & Fes Questions

Is this the same as booking the 6-day tour separately?

It follows the same first 5 days, then adds a Chefchaouen day trip and a Middle Atlas/Ifrane day trip from Fes before your final departure on Day 8. This version also upgrades the Merzouga night from the 6-day tour's shared camp to a luxury desert camp with a private en-suite tent, which is reflected in the price.

Do I need to repack for the Chefchaouen and Ifrane days?

No — both are round-trip day excursions from Fes, so you stay in the same riad for all four Fes nights and don't need to pack an overnight bag.

Is accommodation shared?

Marrakech, the Dades Gorges and Fes are shared twin/dorm rooms, but the €971 price includes a private en-suite tent at a luxury desert camp in Merzouga for the Sahara night. A private room upgrade for the other nights is available on request for an additional cost.

What should I pack for the desert night?

Desert nights get cold even in summer — bring a warm layer, plus sunscreen, a scarf or hat for wind and sun, and comfortable walking shoes.

Is this trip one-way, or does it return to Marrakech?

One-way — you're picked up in Marrakech on Day 1 and dropped off in Fes on Day 8.

What if the group doesn't fill up?

Departures run on fixed weekly dates regardless of group size — your trip runs even if only a few seats are booked.
